Security dialogue between actors in the Far North

On Thursday, March 4, 2021, a security dialogue was held in the hall of the municipal circle of the city of Maroua on the theme "Enrolment of young people in armed groups (Boko Haram): issues, challenges and effective prevention mechanisms for a risk-free youth" carried out within the framework of the sub-regional project "Security for all" co-funded by the European Union in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

The one-day meeting brought together about forty participants from the entire Far North region. On the basis of the different interventions led by Dr. Gustave Gaye, University of Maroua; Mr. Abass Mohamadou, Coordinator of Public Concern; Prof. François Wassouni, expert in the prevention of violent extremism and the Head of the DDR Centre of the Far North region, the participants reflected in groups on effective operational strategies to strengthen the prevention of youth recruitment and to fight against violent extremism.

The exchanges and interventions also focused on the various aspects related to the recruitment of young people into the Boko Haram group, the actions being taken by the State, international organisations and Cameroonian civil society to fight against this phenomenon and the recruitment of young people into the group, as well as the importance of the commitment of all actors to end this phenomenon.

It should be recalled that this security dialogue is part of one of the main activities of the regional project "Security for All" co-funded by the European Union in partnership with the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, whose aim is to strengthen the involvement of civil society in the security sector reform process.

The results of the various working groups were particularly enriching and will serve as a basis for future security dialogues between civil society and the defense forces, as well as to support the development of future activities in the framework of the same project with other target groups, notably civil society.
