Objectives and Missions

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is present in the Sub-Saharan Africa region with more than 20 national and regional projects.

The FES works on:

  • Peace and Security
  • Trade Unions and Social Justice
  • Promotion of Democracy and Media
  • Economy and Development

The FES Peace and Security Competence Centre coordinates through a project-orientated approach within a network of (07) seven FES Offices all interests related to Peace and Security subjects in Sub-Saharan Africa. Previously based in Abuja, it established office in Dakar in November 2016. It directly organises Peace and Security activities in the Sahel-Sahara region and in West Africa.

OBJECTIVES

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Peace and Security Competence Centre aims to:

  • promote a strategic dialogue between Europe and Africa to strengthening the African Peace - and Security Architecture (APSA) and African Governance Architecture (AGA) as a fundamental prerequisite for a stable development path on the continent;
  • develop „New Approaches to Collective Security“ to mobilise against the persistence and the „Hybridisation“ of conflicts, the growing presence of non-governmental perpetrators of violence as well as new security challenges, e. g. transnational terrorist violence combined with organised crime, the increasing resource scarcity also due to climate change and the poor governance with the corruption and oppression to be associated with;
  • address the target groups like experts, institutional representatives, as well as the professional public at national and regional levels in Africa and in Europe through studies, workshops, publications, round tables, and conferences.

MISSIONS

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Peace and Security Competence Centre aims to:

  • promote progressive approaches in Democratic Security Governance and Human Collective Security;
  • create fora for inclusive, regional dialogues;
  • increase awareness for (inter)regional interdependence.
