FG tasked on peace in Niger Delta

Participants at a workshop in Abuja yesterday advised the Federal Government on ways to achieve sustainable peace in the Niger Delta.

The workshop, themed “Instability in Nigeria’s Niger Delta: The Post Amnesty Programme and Sustainable Peace building”, was organised by the Peace and Security Centre of Competence Sub-Saharan Africa, an office of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

The director of the Centre, Holger Grimm, said it was unfortunate that “The presence of oil in Nigeria did not make the happiness for all.”

“What has to be done to achieve peace in the area is to go into an inclusive process to make the local communities part of the peace process and to take really care of the needs of the people, which has not really be done because there are persons saying so far, this amnesty programme has mainly sought to buy peace with money. You need to establish peace by developing a comprehensive strategy.”
