MY SCHOOL, MY PEACE POLE: Training workshop for 50 peace ambassadors in Cameroon

Faced with the increasing number of cases of violence in schools, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Peace and Security Competence Centre Sub-Saharan Africa and the Peace and Security Network of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) have decided to organise workshops called "My school, my island of peace". Through this initiative, no less than 50 young people will be trained in the culture of peace. The first meeting took place in Yaoundé on 22 October 2022.

In 2021 in Cameroon, a teacher was stabbed to death by his pupil, and a few months later it was the turn of a secondary school principal to be stabbed by a pupil. Sadly, there are many such situations, both between students themselves and between students and teachers. Several students have been caught with drugs and weapons at school. This initiative is timely, as Cameroon has recorded several cases of violence in schools in recent years, which has led to the exclusion of some students from classrooms. "Our friends are violent and contemptuous of teachers, and when you try to bring them to their senses they use force, so the task is really hard, and this training is really timely for us because it will equip us to be more effective in the field," confided a participant. This workshop allowed for exchanges on their responsibility in this situation, but also on conflict resolution techniques, among others. After Cameroon, the project will move on to Burkina Faso and give birth to 50 other ambassadors who will also carry the message of peace in their schools and communities.
