This national Cameroon workshop of the "Security for All" project, co-funded by the European Union and the FES, is implemented by the Peace and Security Competence Centre of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES PSCC) and its Cameroon office, in partnership with the Centre des Hautes Etudes de Défense et de Sécurité (CHEDS). It follows the regional training of trainers seminar in multiplex also held from 25th to 27th May 2021 targeting media professionals from Cameroon, Nigeria and Mali.
With about thirty participants, the workshop aimed at sharing with media experts key concepts related to security challenges, technical elements and good practices, for a better understanding of the stakes of security sector reform / democratic governance in Cameroon.
Indeed, the observation made during these three (03) days, was that Cameroon constitutes a "security exception", with a propensity for a "multiform crisis". It is materialised by terrorism with Boko Haram in the North, the Anglophone tension in the North-West and South-West, inter-community conflicts, political cleavages, the rise of hate speech as well as security threats at the borders. This fragility produces an unfavourable working environment for media professionals.
During three days, this very interactive workshop allowed to contextualise the specific elements in Cameroon and to favour the participation of the media in the processes of governance and reform of the security sector.
