Third and last in a series of workshops, which began in Cameroon (28-30 September 2021), then Nigeria (19-21 October 2021), the national capacity building workshop for media professionals in Mali, took place from 02 to 04 November 2021 in Bamako, in duplex with Dakar.
It welcomed about thirty participants and took into account the diversity of actors from all regions of Mali.
Unlike Cameroon and Nigeria, the other countries involved in the project, Mali is part of a historical context of knowledge of the security sector reform process. However, its implementation remains ambiguous and essentially focused on the military aspect.
During three days, the focus was on security challenges marked by complex and protean threats: the vastness of its space revealing the porosity of its borders (seven countries) and the absence of the State, terrorist attacks, the deficit of basic social services, the inadequacy of the education system, intra-religious, inter and intra-community conflicts, the reluctance of the population to collaborate with the media for fear of reprisals (Defence and Security Forces, jihadists) and the proliferation of weapons.
The media experts were able to exchange on key concepts, contextualise the security environment and share on technical elements and good practices of research and investigation.
It is worth recalling that this workshop is part of the European Union's "Security for All" project, co-funded and implemented by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Peace and Security Centre of Competence Sub-Saharan Africa and its Mali office, in partnership with the Centre des Hautes Etudes de Défense et de Sécurité (CHEDS). It is a follow-up to the regional training of trainers seminar on multiplexing that took place from 25th to 27th May 2021 targeting the media in Cameroon, Mali and Nigeria.
