From 19th to 21th October, Lagos hosted, in duplex with Dakar, the second national capacity building workshop for media professionals on Security and Security Sector Reform/Democratic Governance issues.
This workshop reinforces the regional training of trainers seminar that took place from 25th to 27th May 2021 with media from Cameroon, Mali and Nigeria. It is part of the European Union project, "Security for All", co-funded and implemented by the the Peace and Security Competence Centre of Competence Sub-Saharan Africa (FES-PSCC) and its Nigerian office in partnership with the Centre for Higher Studies in Defence and Security (CHEDS).

About 30 participants from Ibadan, Abuja and Lagos interacted on a range of issues related to SSR/G in Africa and Nigeria. The media experts exchanged on key concepts, specific security challenges, technical elements and good practices in research and investigation.

The interest of this workshop is that it highlighted the specificities of Nigeria: a crisis environment characterized by security conflicts in the Lake Chad Basin, the Sahel region, the Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea and an exclusively military security sector reform, a very limited access to information marked by covert or overt censorship, and an increased mistrust of the populations towards media actors.

During three (03) days, this workshop helped to strengthen the capacities of the media through the clarification of concepts, the contextualisation of the security environment and the sharing of techniques and tools. They understood that the key to success in security sector reform is the dynamism of the virtuous triangle of political authorities, defence and security forces, media and the population.
