Expert workshop in Tunis

The authors of the country studies gathered in a suitable setting for reflection, in Tunis, from May 30 to June 1, 2016. The goal of the three-day workshop was to define the major security threats and challenges shared by the countries of the Sahel-Sahara region and to analyse the response to those threats and challenges from governments and regional or international cooperation. The issue of relations between North African and sub-Saharan countries was also on the agenda, and recommendations were to be drafted with a view to enhancing cooperation.

Based on the assumption that there can be no security without development (and vice versa) and because the security of the citizens is guaranteed by the state, the participants extensively debated the role and place of the state in the resolution of the security issues and challenges identified.
