L'importance géostratégique de la région du Golfe de Guinée en Afrique est croissante. Les exportations de gaz et de pétrole sont entrain d'augmenter, de nouveaux exportateurs de pétrole tels que le Ghana sont entrain d'émerger, et la Chine et les autres économies de l'Asie sont entrainde rejoindre l'Europe et les Etats-Unis comme clients énergivores.
Nous assistons à une nouvelle ruée vers le pétrole et le gaz de l'Afrique dans le «nouveau» Golfe de Guinée. D'autre part, beaucoup de pays de la région demeurent fragiles, mal gouvernés et pauvres. Pendant que le pétrole de la région est entrain de « ravitailler le monde », celle-ci a complètement abandonné la grande majorité de ses citoyens.
Allant au-delà des conceptions limitées de « malédiction des ressources», ce livre analyse les défis auxquels les pays situés le long de la côte de l'Afrique de l'Ouest et du Centre sont confrontés pour traduire les richesses provenant de leurs ressources en stabilité, paix, croissance économique, justice sociale et gouvernance démocratique. Il évalue les initiatives existantes pour rendre le gaz et le pétrole bénéfiques pour les populations et suggère des solutions nouvelles, innovantes à la « malédiction des ressources »
