Dialogues about Security Challenges in the Sahelo-Saharan Region

What is the idea behind this project?

Drawing on the lessons learned from the recurrence of crises and the persistence of conflicts in the sub-region due to the inability of states to establish lasting stability and security, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has initiated a project entitled "Security Dialogues in the Sahel-Sahara region: Rethinking the Security in the sub-region" promoting national and sub-regional dialogue on hybrid and cross-border security issues and challenges as well as the interdependencies between North and West Africa.

New Approaches to Collective Security

In many African countries violent conflict determines the socio-political agenda

There is no doubt that in many African countries violent conflict represents a major political and social challenge. Despite their differing constellations, what these conflicts have in common is poor governance and its concomitant side-effects, ranging from corruption and oppression, challenged legitimacies to poor socio-economic participation: Favouring a spiral of violence and subsequent conflicts. At the same time, the nature of the conflicts is ever-changing.

Security for All

The regional project Security for All aims at contributing to actions and institutions ensuring that security provision is more accountable, responsive and equitable to the security needs of the population. Civil societies’ participation in processes of Security Sector Governance and Reform shall be strengthened.
